When a young miner's son perished on the Brecon Beacons in the summer of 1900, it shocked an entire community. On 4 August 1900, the Saturday before a Bank Holiday, a miner from Maerdy, at the head of the Rhondda Fach, decided to take his five-year-old son with him to visit the child's grandparents who still farmed near Brecon.
