Business communication has never been as important as it is the crazy world that we’re living in now. Between online Zoom meetings, increased email and the occasional in person presentation, it has become absolutely essential to know how to communicate your best self.  In this episode, Thom Singer dives into the importance of business communication with Jim Comer, expert in helping people get their message across through the spoken word.  From knowing how many points to make in a presentation to key tips for communicating more effectively online, Jim has the advice that we all need to hear to become better communicators in today’s workplace.    On today’s podcast, you will learn: How to communicate your individuality Individuality leads to likeability and likeability leads to connection. Be the best person that you are, and don’t try to be perfect all of the time.  Be authentic — authentic people are more approachable and relatable. Don’t make major changes to the way you present yourself whether you’re at the water cooler, in a meeting or on stage.    How to communicate your point effectively  Make a few points well, not many points badly. Choose the top two points that you want to drive home and forget the rest. Repeat your points in interesting ways with examples and stories. Do not read off your slides — memorize your top two points and then talk to your audience.    How to give a memorable report or speech  Your content has to be authentic, individual and personal. Practice the delivery and perfect your expression. Let your words and your tone match — if you are sharing exciting news, sound excited. Consider how you are coming across to your audience.  Forget trying to sound perfect — no one wants to hear perfection.    How to communicate effectively online   Zoom is not going anywhere — embrace it as a means of regular communication.   Check your lighting and sound before you start a meeting. Make eye contact online — look at the lens and imagine your audience.  Use a background that is not distracting or cluttered. Dress professionally.  Make sure you know when your camera is ON or OFF.  Acknowledge the obvious — something might go wrong but you can handle it with optimism.   Do you have an example of extraordinary efforts or innovation during these unprecedented times? We would love to hear your story and possibly interview you for an upcoming episode.
