Recently I was with extended family. We were talking about something, and one of the family members said to me, "We know you'll speak your voice." I can't even remember what he was referencing, and I'm not sure he meant it as a compliment, but I took it as one. I enthusiastically responded, "Yup, I got a voice." You know why it's painful when our voice isn't allowed or heard, because voice is, among other things, about relationship, about being known. Think of it this way, we are custodians of these two worlds, our inner life, and the outer world. Voice is the bridge between them, our voice allows us to be present, to bring forth the hidden intimacies of our life, to others, to the world around us, to our God. Voice is a part of what it means to be human. Appropriately human.
