Technical debt, also known as design debt, code debt, or code refactoring, is just a few of the names people use to describe “shortcuts” that are taken by technologists, and business personnel, to “get the solution out the door”. The term is also used to justify many different challenges business and technology people face, that essentially “push the can down the road”. Well, it is much more than technical when business strategy and business agility is affected! All facets of the business – the business itself, the associated technologists and solution developers, as well as human resources within and outside the enterprise are affected. This episode will explore the phrase itself, and its underlying meaning well beyond taking shortcuts in writing and implementing software and computer applications. One of the main issues seems to be that technical debt is much less visible than financial debt, for example, and therefore it is easier to ignore – at least for some period of time.
